Snappers introduce new GM

By Eddie Malloy

April 18, 2011

Downington, PA - Ed Malloy was introduced today as the Snappers new GM. Malloy takes over the reigns of the first year entry in the Ahiba3 League. Malloy was very specific during his comments as for the direction he intends to take the team, saying he wanted to provide the rabid fans of the Snappers with a winning team as soon as possible.

Like any expansion team we have to be realistic in our expectations. The fact that we are in a division with other expansion teams should give us a chance to be competitive right away. But being an expansion team, with all players brought in through the expansion draft and free agent signings, depth over the long season will be the big issue. Hopefully injuries will not hurt our team and we can keep our best players on the field and continue to compete, as the Snappers have during the opening weeks of the season.

When questioned on his overall team philosophy for building a winner for Downingtown, Malloy promised to bring in players who play the game hard and do things the proper way. We will cherish as gold our draft picks, as I truly believe in the grow our own approach as compared to free spending on overpriced with little left free agents.

When asked about taking over the team after it was put together by another GM, Malloy said he can't worry about what ifs, and the players here are our players. He intends to spend the next few days evaluating the talent in the organization and will quickly put his stamp on the setup of the teams. We have entirely too many players in some of our minor league camps and I will have to sit down with the managers, get their input, and get the teams down to a workable size.

As far as the Snappers ML squad the season is well underway and as long as the players that have the jobs work hard and give a solid effort they will continue to hold their jubs until someone steps up and takes the job away.

Mississauga musings 2011, ed. 1

By Jeff- Blue

April 18, 2011

Mississauga, CAN - The Mississauga Spartans, who qualified for the playoffs last year as the Las Vegas Holyrollers, faced the same budget crunch as most of the original AHIBA teams as the overwhelming majority of their players all came to arbitration at the same time, a glitch in the original Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and the players.

Spartan management chose to attack the problem with being over the salary cap in a unique way. Rather than signing average players to huge deals in arbitration, they simply cut most of their players, choosing to take only a few to arbitration: Rookie of the Year Ken Wright, superstar closer Leslie Sweetapple, slugging outfielder Lynn Bannatyne, SP Jose Garcia, SP Anthony Hill and outfielder John Slaughter. The rest of the team, including several top-notch players, were allowed to leave via free agency.

Needless to say, the Spartans will likely struggle a bit this season as they wait for the sixth-ranked minor league system to start graduating prospects.

The Spartans got off to a slow start, but have gone 4-3 in their last seven and have won the last two games.

Stay tuned for more reports as the season progresses.

Wingate Gladiators Team Meeting!

By Bumstead-

April 18, 2011

Jeff Palin: Sit down everybody. Where's Pak? Spike, tell him to get his butt in here!
JP: Nice of you to join us Pak...
STP: Sorry Sir, I thought we were meeting in the dugout...
JP: Really? Nevermind...OK guys, I want to talk about how the season is going or not going however you want to look at it. So far, we have played like crap and are 7-6 and I can tell you the owner is not happy! We have 17 friggin' errors in 14 games leading to at least 3 losses that our pitchers didn't deserve. Min, do you want to explain how somebody can make 4 errors at 1B in just 4 games?? I don't want to hear it! As a frame of reference, and I don't want to jinx him, but Felix Michaud has yet to make an error in 157 games at the AHIBA3 level, so don't hand me excuses. I don't expect perfection but spring training is where you work out the kinks, not now. I bought all of you new gloves, except Michaud; keep that glove as it is golden. And, what's up with the strikeouts? As a team we have struck out 77 times and only walked 38 times! Take out Bruce and the rest of you guys only have 26 walks in 14 games! What are you doing up there? I realize we are just 2 weeks into the season but c'mon don't lose control of the strike zone. I will tell you right now, if things don't start turning around some of you are going to find yourselves watching the games from the bench. We got guys on the bench that would be starting on most these teams in my opinion.
Spike Horn: Boss, we have gotten off to a slow start but I know we can turn this around. The pitching has come around lately and these guys will start hitting and we will come roaring back.

Trouble in the Gladiator Clubhouse?

Wingate Gazette
by Mary Jane Pleasant

April 18, 2011

Wingate, IN - Lot's of yelling could be heard from inside the clubhouse today. One has to wonder if the expectations of the season are getting to the players. I asked Spike what was going on in there. "We are just getting ready for our game tonight against Phoenix," said Spike. "Nothing out of the ordinary." However, a person that wished to remain anonymous said, "Mr. Palin ripped them a new one and suggested that some players might hit the bench/road if they don't start winning." Murray Clay said "Who's this so-called source? I have no idea what you are talking about. We are a team and we will work things out as a team. Now if you don't mind we have a game to play." Other players asked to comment refused to say anything and just headed out to the field.

While Wingate may have started off a little slow they are still right in it. Let's see how the do on this road trip to Phoenix and Washington. The pitching has remained really good, the hitting just needs to come around; well, that and they could stand to make less errors as a team.

HL's Top Player Named

By Oscar Madison

April 11, 2011

Thunder Bay, CAN -  At the age of 32, Reynaldo López might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Thunder Bay first baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .400 batting average. For his efforts López collected the Hurlers League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 10 hits in 25 at-bats, 3 home runs and 12 RBIs last week in 5 games.
